Overview

The Grenadian education system at a glance.

Grenada's education system is modelled on the British framework, a legacy of its Commonwealth heritage. Education is free and compulsory for children between the ages of 5 and 16. English is the language of instruction across all levels, and students work toward internationally recognised qualifications — the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC), the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE), or the Cambridge GCE. These credentials open doors to universities in the UK, United States, Canada, Australia, and beyond.

Stage 1

Early Childhood

Pre-primary programmes typically serve children from 3 months to 5 years. Usually attached to primary schools or operated independently as private nurseries.

Stage 2

Primary (7 years)

Compulsory from age 5. Culminates in a Common Entrance Examination that determines placement into lower secondary school.

Stage 3

Secondary (5 years)

Three years of lower secondary followed by two years of upper secondary. Students sit CSEC at the end, or continue to CAPE / Cambridge GCE A-Levels.

Stage 4

Tertiary

T.A. Marryshow Community College is the national public institution; St. George's University offers international degrees; UWI Open Campus provides distance learning.
